14U D1 Super NIT Game 2: Bandits 14U 10, Canes 9

In a very uncharacteristic game, the Canes built a 7-0 lead after two innings against Bandits 14U, but then watched them score ten unanswered runs. A late rally ended with the tying run on second base as the Bandits pulled out a 10-9 victory.

The Bandits were hitless through the first two innings, and the Canes actually outhit them, 10-6. But the Bandits took advantage of some control issues to bring their offense to life, ultimately earning nine free passes in a game shortened to just four innings by the time limit.

The effort and mental approach led to a quick postgame reminder from the coaching staff about the importance of being ready to play all the time. With the round-robin format, game times for tomorrow morning are already set for bright and early in Knightdale.

Game 2 Canes scoring plays
First inning
Jake singled and went to second on a wild pitch. A wild pitch put him on third. Gavin walked and stole second. Drew lined a two-run double. Bennett doubled home Drew. Ty singled. Macon singled in Bennett. Andrew's fielder's choice scored Ty. Colin's two-out single scored Macon.
Score after one inning: Canes 6, Bandits 14U 0

Second inning
Jake walked. Gavin was hit by a pitch. Drew singled in Jake.
Score after two innings: Canes 7, Bandits 14U 0

Fourth inning
Elias slammed a double. Gavin singled him home. Drew's double scored Gavin.
Score after four innings: Bandits 14U 10, Canes 9

Pitching Performances
Drew started and fanned four in two and a third hitless innings.

Ty threw and inning and a third of relief and worked out of a jam.

Asher used a good pickoff move to get an out without throwing a pitch.

Dugout wisdom
Nine of the ten Bandits players were wearing red pinstripe jerseys. The tenth was wearing a black t-shirt. "There's something different about this guy," Andrew said with a deadpan look as the tenth player hit. "I can't quite put my finger on it."

Game 2 Web Gems
  • Colin stayed down on a tough one-hop line drive to his backhand side and then made the throw to first to end the second.
  • Drew was heads-up and in the right place to cut off a throw from the outfield, then threw to Bryce, who relayed to Gavin for the out against an overaggressive runner after a base hit in the fourth.

14U D1 Super NIT Game 1: Canes 12, Rivercats 14U 3

The Canes made a solid debut in 14U D1 competition, playing up and coming away with a 12-2 win over the Rivercats in a game limited to four innings by the run rule.

Somewhat surprisingly, the offense recorded just four hits, but it also took advantage of seven walks in just three offensive innings to go with five errors. Seven of the 12 Canes runners who eventually scored originally reached by either a walk or an error.

Game 1 Canes scoring plays
First inning
Jake doubled and stole third. Gavin walked and stole second. Chace walked. Bennett's fielder's choice  forced Chace at second, but Jake scored and then Gavin tore all the way around to score. Ty singled home Bennett and took second on the throw. Macon walked. A wild pitch moved up both runners. Another wild pitch scored Ty. Colin's grounder to short turned into an error, scoring Macon.
Score after one inning: Canes 5, Rivercats 14U 2

Second inning
Bryce reached on an error. Jake reached on an error. A wild pitch advanced both runners. Gavin's fielder's choice scored Bryce. Drew singled home Jake. Drew stole second and scored on an error.
Score after two innings: Canes 8, Rivercats 14U 2

Third inning
Colin and Andrew walked. Gavin drew a two-out walk. Drew singled home a pair and stole second. Gavin Chace walked. Wild pitches scored two more.
Score after three innings: Canes 12, Rivercats 14U 2

Pitching Performances
Andrew started and gave up just one hit in his two innings of work.

Chace retired six in a row, including three of the last four by strikeout.

Dugout wisdom
The field umpire was vigilantly keeping players out of the opening of the dugout, prompting Coach Kevin to announce, "I'm going to build a wall there to keep you guys away from it."

"I'll pay for it," Elias responded.

Players also had a fierce game of Baseball Jeopardy going during a couple of the long Canes innings. If you ever need someone to estimate the value of your pennies, Ty's your guy.

Super NIT Championship: Canes 15, GBI Express Blue 14U 2

The Canes finished up a remarkable 5-0 run to the Rawlings Super NIT championship with a 15-2 bludgeoning of GBI Express Blue. Playing up in a 14U tournament, the Canes recorded more hits in the four-inning championship game (16) than they allowed as a pitching staff in the 27 defensive innings of the entire tournament (12).

The title game wasn't much in doubt after a five-run first, but then, just to make sure, the Canes scored five more in the second and four in the third. That was more than enough to support another outstanding effort on the mound, as three pitchers combined to allow just four hits.

Playing in just the team's second ever tournament on the big field, the Canes outscored five opponents  40-7 and beat three teams in elimination bracket play by a combined 28-3. Nine pitchers saw action in the five games, and they limited opponents to a combined .130 batting average.

Jake walked and stole second. Gavin walked. Drew smacked an RBI double. Chace singled home Gavin. Macon's two-out single scored Chace. Colin and Andrew walked. Bryce singled home a pair.
Score after one-half inning: Canes 5, GBI 0

Second inning
Jake singled and Gavin doubled. Drew singled in Jake. Chace hit a sacrifice fly. Bennett doubled. Macon hit a two-run single. Colin singled, and then Andrew singled home Macon.
Score after one and a half innings: Canes 10, GBI 0

Third inning
Ty singled. Gavin hit his second double. A wild pitch scored Ty and moved up Gavin. Elias walked and stole second. Chace singled home Gavin. Bennett walked. Macon hit another two-run single.
Score after two and a half innings: Canes 14, GBI 1

Fourth inning
Bryce singled and went to second on a wild pitch, then scored on Gavin's ball past short.
Score after three and a half innings: Canes 15, GBI 1

Pitching Performances
Bennett started and gave up just one hit in two innings.

Ty threw a hitless third.

Elias closed it out in the fourth.

Jake warmed up in the bullpen, causing his mom a rogue parent to heckle the coaching staff about whether they knew what they were doing.

Dugout wisdom
With Coach Kevin II calling the pitches and Elias on the mound in the fourth, there wasn't a lot of time to go over pitch selection. So as Coach Kevin signaled for pitches to the first hitter, he asked, "Does Eli have a curve ball?" The ever-helpful Coach Sean replied, "Let's find out."

Turns out, after Coach Kevin II gave the signal for a curve, that Eli does indeed have one, in case you were wondering.

Also, you probably had to be there, but Bennett correctly pointed out that this water spot in the dugout looked exactly like the state of North Carolina.

That's Bennett's shoe pointing out Raleigh. Important stuff happens in the dugout, folks.

Semifinal Web Gems
  • Gavin, Colin and Chace teamed up on a quick 6-4-3 double play to end the first.
  • Ty with a nice bit of PFP to end the third.
  • Ty ended the game by smoothly fielding a grounder at third and stepping on the bag to finish off the win.

Super NIT Semifinals: Canes 5, MVP Black 1

Two Canes pitchers teamed up on a one-hitter for the second straight game, this time leading to a 5-1 win over MVP Black in the 14U Super NIT semifinals.

This time it was Drew and Bennett combining on the pitching performance. Drew pitched around some trouble in the first and second, getting out of bases loaded jams in both frames. And when MVP didn't take advantage of those two scoring opportunities--they left five runners in scoring position in the game--they had missed their chance. The Canes did not allow a hit in the final four innings.

The offense generated just four hits, but they were timely. Bennett pretty much called it. After falling behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first, he said, "We'll just get one here, and then one, and then one." Instead, they got one, one, two and one, and then watched the time limit run out after five innings.

The victory moved the Canes into the 14U championship game against GBI Blue.

Semifinal Canes scoring plays
Second inning
Ty reached on a fielder's choice. Macon doubled. Andrew's ball to second wasn't fielded, scoring Ty.
Score after one and one-half innings: Canes 1, MVP 1

Third inning
Bryce walked. Gavin moved him over with a fielder's choice. Drew walked. Chace powered a sacrifice fly.
Score after two and a half innings: Canes 2, MVP 1

Fourth inning
Bennett cracked a one-out double. Colin's ball to right wasn't fielded, scoring Bennett. Colin sprinted all the way around from second on Eli's bunt.
Score after three and a half innings: Canes 4, MVP 1

Fifth inning
Jake walked and stole second. Gavin singled, scoring Jake.
Score after four and a half innings: Canes 5, MVP 1

Pitching Performances
Drew started and struck out four over three one-hit innings.

Bennett fanned a pair in his two hitless innings of relief.

Dugout wisdom
With the bases loaded and two outs in the second inning, Gavin fielded a grounder to short. Instead of stepping on second, or flipping the ball to a rapidly approaching Colin, he threw across the diamond to first to get the out. When he came into the dugout, Coach Sean helpfully asked, "There were two outs and the bases were loaded. Why didn't you just take that one yourself?"

"That's no fun," Gavin correctly replied.

Super NIT Quarterfinals: Canes 8, SW Storm 14U 0

A long day of baseball playing up in the 14U field began with an 8-0 shutout of the South Wake Storm at Middle Creek. The game was shortened to five innings by the run rule.

Andrew and Colin teamed up on the shutout, which was very nearly a no-hitter--the Storm managed just one hit. No Storm runner reached third base and only two runners made it to second base.

After the game, Coach Sean was bragging on his new method of giving signs, which apparently sometimes includes the macarena. "Eli gave me a little hip swivel back," he said. Elias beamed proudly, and then said, "These hips don't lie."

Quarterfinal Canes scoring plays
First inning
Gavin singled and stole second. A wild pitch moved him to third. Drew walked and stole second. Macon's two out grounder wasn't fielded, scoring Gavin. Ty walked. Bennett's single scored a pair. Colin's single scored Ty.
Score after one inning: Canes 4, Storm 0

Second inning
Asher walked. Jake singled. Gavin singled. Drew's single scored Asher. Chace's sac fly scored Jake.
Score after two innings: Canes 6, Storm 0

Fifth inning
Colin reached on a fielder's choice and went to second on a wild pitch. Eli's single scored him. Asher doubled. Jake's single actually scored a pair, but the final score was limited to 8-0 because of the run rule. Don't worry, he got two RBI in the book.
Score after six innings: Canes 8, Storm 0

Pitching Performances
Andrew gave up just one hit in two innings.

Colin faced the minimum in his three innings of relief and did not allow a hit.

Dugout wisdom
Asher did his best limbo to get out of the way of a tight pitch during one at-bat. Jake immediately said, "We've got a gymnast over here. Watch out Simone Biles." His teammates quickly congratulated him on his semi-timely reference. "Hey, Asher and I are taller than her," Jake said. For the record, Simone Biles is 4-foot-9. #shorty

Because it's funny, here is an actual photo of Simone Biles standing next to Shaq:

Super NIT Game 2: Canes 7, NC Stealth 1

The Canes won the team's second straight game against older competition, taking a 7-1 win over the 14U NC Stealth. Four pitchers teamed up to allow just three Stealth runners to make it past second base during the course of the game.

An opportunistic offense scored seven runs on just six hits. Of the seven Canes runs that crossed the plate, six of those runners reached base via either walk or error.

The win means the Canes finished pool play 2-0 and now await seeds and game times later this evening.

Game 2 Canes scoring plays
First inning
Jake walked and stole second. A wild pitch put him on third. Drew's fielder's choice scored him.  Chace doubled and scored on Macon's single.
Score after one inning: Canes 2, Stealth 0

Third inning
Asher walked and went to second on a fielder's choice. He hustled all the way home on Eli's grounder to third. Drew mashed a double. Chace dropped the ball into right, scoring Elias. Drew scored on a fielder's choice, and Chace scored when the ball was thrown away.
Score after three innings: Canes 6, Stealth 0

Sixth inning
Gavin walked. Eli ran for him and took second on a wild pitch, then third on another wild pitch, where he was in position to score on Chace's sacrifice fly.
Score after six innings: Canes 7, Stealth 0

Pitching Performances
Drew started and fired two hitless innings.

Macon followed up with a hitless frame.

Asher threw two scoreless innings.

Chace finished it up in the sixth and did not allow a hit.

Dugout wisdom
Gavin was being very conspicuous about always getting the on-deck bats, greeting hitters when they came in from their at-bats, and just generally being very active. Finally, a teammate asked him, "Are you getting ready to hit?" The very honest response from Gavin, who was on the bench with an injury: "No. I'm just trying to be obvious so Coach Sean will notice me and give me an at-bat."

Game 2 Web Gems
  • Bennett gobbled up a slow runner to third and made a strong throw to Ty to get the first out of the third.
  • Asher speared a line drive to pitcher, then threw to Bennett at first to complete an inning-ending double play in the fourth.
  • Jake made a terrific play deep in the hole between first and second in the sixth and tossed to Bennett for the out.

Super NIT Game 1: Canes 5, TPA-Adonna 14U 3

In the fastest game in 13U/14U baseball history, the Canes and TPA-Adonna somehow completed seven innings with at least ten minutes still left on the clock. And even better, the Canes got the win, earning a 5-3 victory in their first game playing up.

So, how did they do it so quickly? Good pitching played a big part, with three Canes pitching combining to allow just three hits. And of the 39 outs made by both teams in the game, 12 came on the first pitch. Also, the home plate umpire, the ever-friendly Mr. Tommy (who did a high school football game on Friday night that probably took about an hour and a half), was in a very big hurry.

Game 1 Canes scoring plays
Fourth inning
Drew led off with a double and stole third. Chace's long drive to center wasn't fielded and Drew scored. Chace stole third and scored on a wild pitch. Ty walked, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a wild pitch.
Score after four innings: Canes 3, TPA 1

Sixth inning
Drew lined a double. Chace singled and Drew scored, with Chace hustling in to second. Gavin powered a two-out RBI double.
Score after six innings: Canes 5, TPA 1

Pitching Performances
Ty started and threw three one-hit innings.

Andrew didn't walk a hitter in his two scoreless innings.

Bennett shut it down with two innings of relief.

Dugout wisdom
An elementary school-aged girl spent most of the first several innings trying to stretch a big purple blanket over a good portion of the bleachers behind the TPA dugout. When she finally made some progress, Colin looked on with admiration. "Look at that," he said. "She's got her own man cave."

Game 1 Web Gems
  • Nice job by Macon to gun down a runner trying to steal second in the third inning, with Chace slapping on the tag.
  • Andrew came off the mound and made a good play in foul territory on a popup in the fourth.
  • Another good play on a popup in foul ground, this time by Drew over by the fence near first base in the fifth.
  • Bryce chased down a wild pitch and flipped to Andrew covering the plate to get a runner trying to score and end the fifth.
  • Another caught stealing for a Canes catcher in the seventh, this time Bryce throwing to Chace for the out.

Battle for the Bats Game 4: Canes 10, Dirtbags 3

There are certainly worse places to spend a Sunday than at the baseball field. But did this game take a while? Based on this picture taken in the fourth inning, you might say that...

The Canes scored the first ten runs of the game and eventually finished out a 10-3 win over the Dirtbags in five innings, the longest game of the four-game tournament. That meant the Canes finished the event 4-0. The victory means the team wins a bat, which if form holds will last exactly one practice before being dented.

Some impressive stats from the weekend: the Canes outscored their four opponents 42-12 and never trailed at any time in the event. Ten different pitchers saw action, and the staff as a whole limited opponents to a .212 batting average. The defense committed just three errors in 17 defensive innings.

Game 4 Canes scoring plays
First inning
Jake walked and stole second. Macon's fielder's choice moved him over. Drew singled home Jake. Chace walked. Ty blasted a two-run double.
Score after one-half inning: Canes 3, Dirtbags 0

Third inning
Macon singled and stole second. Chace demolished an RBI double. Ty's fielder's choice moved over Chace, and he scored on a wild pitch.
Score after two and a half innings: Canes 5, Dirtbags 0

Fourth inning
Asher reached on a grounder through the middle. Jake lined a double. Macon walked. Drew was hit by a pitch, scoring Asher. Chace smashed another two-run double. Ty singled home Drew. Bennett's fielder's choice scored Chace.
Score after three and a half innings: Canes 10, Dirtbags 0

Pitching Performances
Drew started and went three scoreless innings, recording six of his nine outs via strikeout.

Bryce chipped in with an inning of solid relief.

Chace finished things in the fifth by retiring three of the four batters he faced.

Dugout wisdom
After his second at-bat, Drew came back to the dugout with a perplexed look on his face. "He gave me the bunt sign before the pitch," he said, pointing towards Coach Sean. "I was confused."

For the record, Coach Sean was just kidding.

Also, the wet field plus Coach Kevin I's ever-present towel meant the Canes were usually in charge of drying off the foul balls. You can only imagine the comments that ensued. Also, when you ask Jake to check and see if a baseball is dry, he licks it. I am not making this up.

Game 4 Web Gems
  • No outright web gems in this one, which makes it a good time to point out that Canes catchers did a terrific job behind the plate all weekend. With the big backstop meaning easy extra bases on any balls past the catcher, they helped the pitchers in all four games.

Battle for the Bats Game 3: Canes 7, Rawlings Prospects 2

Was it cold at 7:30 in Knightdale? You decide:

We have put in a request for the Canes to produce team snuggies for the next merchandise order.

Despite the chilly temperatures, the Canes pulled out a 7-2 victory in a game that somehow took 1:45 to play but only saw them have three offensive innings. That was primarily due to some very long at-bats. The Canes got just four hits, but they also drew seven walks in those three offensive innings. To put that into perspective, Canes pitchers walked seven batters in the two Sunday games combined.

Because of the way the other games went and the round-robin format, the victory meant the Canes won the tournament championship. But there was still one game to play, so hold on to your snuggies.

Game 3 Canes scoring plays
First inning
The first five batters in a row walked. Bennett hit a two-run single.
Score after one inning: Canes 4, Prospects 0

Third inning
Chace reached on an error and went to third on a wild pitch. Bennett drove him in with a single. Colin singled and went to second on a wild pitch. Asher walked. A wild pitch moved up both runners, and Eli's grounder scored Colin. Bryce singled home Asher.
Score after three innings: Canes 7, Prospects 0

Pitching Performances
Bennett started and threw two one-hit innings.

Macon fired a scoreless third.

Gavin gave way to Colin in the fourth, who worked out of a jam.

Dugout wisdom
Sunday morning's early arrival to the field meant the Canes coaches learned quite a bit about the art of "saving the cage" for an imaginary team. In addition, Coach Kevin II was able to offer some advice to other teams about how to arrive at the field in order to get the cage first.

Game 3 Web Gems
  • With runners on second and third and two outs in the second, Colin charged in hard on a roller to second, made the quick transfer, and finished it with an accurate throw to end the inning.
  • Nice bunt coverage in the fourth, as Colin fielded a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher and threw to a hustling Jake covering first to get the out.

Battle for the Bats Game 2: Canes 13, Carolina Rage 4

The Canes finished the first day of big field play with a 2-0 record after winning a 13-4 game against the Carolina Rage. The combination of texts from Brian's Apprentice/Coach Eric and Gavin's quality bookkeeping allowed the blog to more or less reconstruct what happened. As Gavin put it, "If you can't play, doing the book isn't all bad." Welcome to life as an adult, Gavin.

Games begin again tomorrow for Breakfast in Knightdale at 8:30.

Game 2 Canes scoring plays
First inning
Jake singled and stole a pair of bases. Macon's fielder's choice scored him. Drew doubled and scored on a pair of passed balls.
Score after one-half inning: Canes 2, Rage 0

Second inning
Colin walked and stole second. Andrew singled. Bryce drove in Colin. Andrew stole third and scored on Asher's chopper. Jake was safe on a fielder's choice, then stole two more bases. Macon's single scored him. A passed ball put Macon on second, where he moved to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a bad throw back to the pitcher.
Score after one and a half innings: Canes 7, Rage 0

Fourth inning
Asher beat out an infield hit. Jake singled. Macon reached on an error, with Asher scoring. A passed ball advanced both runners. Chace crushed a two-run triple and scored on a passed ball. Bennett blasted a double. Elias reached on a fielder's choice. Ty demolished a two-run double that ended the game because the ball entered orbit.
Score after three and a half innings: Canes 13, Rage 4

Pitching Performances
Drew started and went two good innings.

Ty relieved and went two more quality innings.

Dugout wisdom
Bennett took a pitch off the head and was eager to head to first. "Hold on a second," Coach Sean told him after dashing out to the batter's box. "You just got hit in the head." Coach Kevin II also hustled up to provide medical assistance. "What's this guy's name?" Coach Sean asked Bennett, pointing to Coach Kevin.

"That's Coach Adam," Bennett said.

Coach Kevin is no longer speaking to Bennett.

Battle for the Bats Game 1: Canes 12, War Hawks 3

The Canes won their first game on the big field, taking a 12-3 victory over the Holly Springs War Hawks in Knightdale.

Three pitchers combined to limit the War Hawks to just four hits, and the Canes offense took advantage of a couple of errors and eight walks and two hit batters to generate plenty of runs. The game was blown open by a ten-run second, and with Coach Sean batting all 12 players in the first tournament of the year, all 12 players had a TAB by midway through the second.

Gavin suffered a heel injury during the game. But don't worry, he didn't have to miss the postgame handshake line, thanks to Coach Kevin II:

The rare Saturday break between games meant the Canes had to find other ways to entertain themselves. While some took advantage of the nearby playground, Colin had loftier goals:

A post shared by Canes-Gallaher (@canesgallaher) on

Game 1 Canes scoring plays
First inning
Jake walked and went to second on a passed ball. Gavin was hit by a pitch. A wild pitch moved Jake to third. Drew walked. Chase dropped in an RBI single. Gavin scored on a wild pitch.
Score after one-half inning: Canes 2, War Hawks 0

Second inning
Elias walked. Andrew singled. A wild pitch advanced both runners. Bryce hit an RBI single. Asher walked. Gavin's one-out double cleared the bases. Drew was hit by a pitch. Chace reached on an error in center. Ty's fielder's choice scored Gavin. Colin walked. Macon went the other way for an RBI single. Two runs scored on Bennett's grounder to short. Elias reached on a grounder to short that scored one.
Score after one and a half innings: Canes 12, War Hawks 0

Pitching Performances
Andrew started and worked into the second.

Asher threw an inning and a third of scoreless relief.

Colin finished it with a spotless fourth.

Dugout wisdom
The War Hawks pitcher started out with some control issues in the first three batters, walking a pair and hitting one with a pitch. "Guys, I think we're in trouble," Asher said. "He's throwing a no-hitter."

Midway through the game, a large flock of birds flew over the field. Colin proceeded to go into a lengthy explanation of why birds fly in a V formation. As his teammates looked at him with a mixture of confusion and admiration, he shrugged and said, "I know my geese."

Game 1 Web Gems
  • Chace made a great play on a hard one-hopper to first to end the first.
  • Andrew made a sliding catch of a would-be blooper to center to finish the third.
