Super NIT Semifinals: Canes 5, MVP Black 1

Two Canes pitchers teamed up on a one-hitter for the second straight game, this time leading to a 5-1 win over MVP Black in the 14U Super NIT semifinals.

This time it was Drew and Bennett combining on the pitching performance. Drew pitched around some trouble in the first and second, getting out of bases loaded jams in both frames. And when MVP didn't take advantage of those two scoring opportunities--they left five runners in scoring position in the game--they had missed their chance. The Canes did not allow a hit in the final four innings.

The offense generated just four hits, but they were timely. Bennett pretty much called it. After falling behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first, he said, "We'll just get one here, and then one, and then one." Instead, they got one, one, two and one, and then watched the time limit run out after five innings.

The victory moved the Canes into the 14U championship game against GBI Blue.

Dugout wisdom
With the bases loaded and two outs in the second inning, Gavin fielded a grounder to short. Instead of stepping on second, or flipping the ball to a rapidly approaching Colin, he threw across the diamond to first to get the out. When he came into the dugout, Coach Sean helpfully asked, "There were two outs and the bases were loaded. Why didn't you just take that one yourself?"

"That's no fun," Gavin correctly replied.
