Super NIT Quarterfinals: Canes 8, SW Storm 14U 0

A long day of baseball playing up in the 14U field began with an 8-0 shutout of the South Wake Storm at Middle Creek. The game was shortened to five innings by the run rule.

Andrew and Colin teamed up on the shutout, which was very nearly a no-hitter--the Storm managed just one hit. No Storm runner reached third base and only two runners made it to second base.

After the game, Coach Sean was bragging on his new method of giving signs, which apparently sometimes includes the macarena. "Eli gave me a little hip swivel back," he said. Elias beamed proudly, and then said, "These hips don't lie."

Quarterfinal Canes scoring plays
First inning
Gavin singled and stole second. A wild pitch moved him to third. Drew walked and stole second. Macon's two out grounder wasn't fielded, scoring Gavin. Ty walked. Bennett's single scored a pair. Colin's single scored Ty.
Score after one inning: Canes 4, Storm 0

Second inning
Asher walked. Jake singled. Gavin singled. Drew's single scored Asher. Chace's sac fly scored Jake.
Score after two innings: Canes 6, Storm 0

Fifth inning
Colin reached on a fielder's choice and went to second on a wild pitch. Eli's single scored him. Asher doubled. Jake's single actually scored a pair, but the final score was limited to 8-0 because of the run rule. Don't worry, he got two RBI in the book.
Score after six innings: Canes 8, Storm 0

Pitching Performances
Andrew gave up just one hit in two innings.

Colin faced the minimum in his three innings of relief and did not allow a hit.

Dugout wisdom
Asher did his best limbo to get out of the way of a tight pitch during one at-bat. Jake immediately said, "We've got a gymnast over here. Watch out Simone Biles." His teammates quickly congratulated him on his semi-timely reference. "Hey, Asher and I are taller than her," Jake said. For the record, Simone Biles is 4-foot-9. #shorty

Because it's funny, here is an actual photo of Simone Biles standing next to Shaq:

  • With a runner on first and one out, Gavin scooped up a grounder to short, stepped on second, and threw to Chace for the inning-ending double play.
  • In a pretty close simulation of a drill from practice on Wednesday night, Gavin made a good running play on a popup behind third in the fifth.
