Summer World Series '18 Quarterfinals: Canes 8, Dirtbags 3

The Canes opened bracket play at Northern Nash High with an 8-3 win over the Dirtbags. The game was close throughout, but the Canes blew it open with a four-run fourth, and time expired in the fifth.

Beginning a trend that would last throughout bracket play, the Canes defense was airtight, as they did not commit an error in five innings.

Quarterfinal Canes scoring plays
First inning

Score after two innings: Canes 4, Dirtbags 2

Fourth inning
Jake singled and stole second. Gavin walked. Chace hit an RBI single. Drew walked. Macon lined a two-run single. Ty's fielder's choice scored Drew.

Pitching Performances
Andrew started and went two solid innings.

Chace was terrific in two and a third innings of two-hit relief.

Drew struck out the final two hitters to preserve the win.

Dugout Wisdom
Andrew had an unusual experience in the second, when he worked a 3-0 count. The next pitch was a strike...and the umpire promptly went through his entire strikeout call. Around the time he finished punching Andrew "out," the umpire checked his counter and realized the count was actually 3-1. When asked about it upon his return to the dugout, Andrew remarked with a perfectly straight face, "That seemed a little overboard."
